Crafting with Shetland Sheep Wool

The fleece from a Shetland sheep is very versatile and suitable for a number of crafting uses such as:

*Spinning
*Felting
*Weaving

Raw, Greasy, Unwashed Sheep Fleece

The fleece has not been washed, so some vegetable matter may remain. Although we do lightly skirt all our fleeces. The weights shown are always after we have lightly skirted the fleece. It is also very rich in natural lanolin, if you are looking to spin the fleece whilst still greasy this is a great choice of fleece.

Naturally coloured

Our shetland fleeces come in a range of beautiful, natural colours, from white, through brown to black. This adds a wonderful depth to finished woollen items, such as knitwear and home wear.

How we shear our sheep

We always shear our sheep at the optimum point for them, when the fleece has started to “rise” or naturally separate from the sheep. Every sheep we have is shorn here on our own family farm by a professional shearer to minimise stress to the animal.
Shearing is a very important process and critical to animal welfare, this is because if last year’s wool growth is not removed, the sheep can get too hot which can lead to illness.
Our sheep are raised year round on natural Orkney pasture, which encourages growth of a thick warm fleece with a longer staple length.
